Guide to dental tourists travelling to Hungary

Dental tourism is actually a type of medical tourism. It is all about looking for dental care outside your local healthcare service. One of the main driving factors of dental tourism is the cost factor - as with any other service people travel to cheaper destinations.

One of the very attractive destinations for dental tourism is Budapest. Hungarian dentists are renowned for their international accreditations as well as membership of international organizations. This is mainly due to the fact that dentistry programs offered by the Hungarian universities are top of the league.

Thanks to the many low-cost airlines arriving at Ferihegy Airport, more and more British and Irish tourists have been travelling to Budapest to take advantage of the affordable prices. Dental tourism is becoming rather popular amongst the citizens of the European Union. Many foreign patients can confirm that long-lasting and effective dental treatments are carried out in Hungary with the use of excellent materials, with high-class and world-standard service. Dental tourism can save large amounts of money on the treatment, while the visitor can spend beautiful days in Budapest sightseeing or relaxing.

Dental treatment usually required between 3 to 12 days in Budapest. Treatment is organized in the way that you will have time to tour Budapest and enjoy its spectacular beauty. Dental treatments like dental implants, bridges, dental crowns, root canal treatment and veneers can be done during your stay.

Dental tourists can also minimize the costs by staying in one of the many comfortable Budapest hostels/apartments that our clinic offers.

It takes only a two hour flight to get here from the United Kingdom. Our clinic offers a free shuttle service between airport, dental clinic and accommodation to our patients.

Some of the airlines that fly from the UK and Ireland to Budapest:

Things to do in Budapest - a short guide for our patients:

Who has ever been able to explain where love comes from? Well it is a complex psychological process. I think it is much the same with cities, through their attraction is easier to explain. We take away with us the impressions of buildings, streets, squares and sights, and of course, the atmosphere, the feel of the place.

What first pops into my mind about Budapest is the warm hospitality of people, excellent food and wine, vivid cultural life, rich museums, beautiful buildings, reliable and frequent public transportation. Here the historic blends with the modern, the hills harmonize with the river; it treasures the old and embraces the new.

Would you like to know more about Budapest and Hungary? Well, you can find more interesting information here:

Budapest is the capital of Hungary and one of the most beautiful historical capitals in Europe. The city actually consists of three cities: Óbuda, Buda and Pest and situated on the banks of the Danube. It has an area of 525 square km. Budapest is the only capital, where there are more than 130 thermal springs and wells. You can find three islands in Budapest – Óbuda Island, Margaret Island and Csepel Island – and nine bridges, two of which carry railway lines. One of the most famous bridges in Budapest is the Chain bridge.

If you are coming to visit Budapest, you can’t miss is the Buda castle, Fishermen’s Bastion, Mathias Church, Gellért Hill with the Statue of Liberty, Heroes’ Square with the Millennial Monument, Art Gallery, The Museum of Fine Arts and the Vajdahunyad castle.

Hungarian cuisine:

The first thing that people recall about Hungarian cuisine is goulash, but you must try fish soup, chicken paprika, a good home-made pörkölt (stew) and the excellent fresh-water fish: grilled pike-perch, trout with almond. Also compulsory is goose liver. Whether fried or grilled, cold or hot, it is simply unforgettable.

The restaurant scene has developed amazingly in the last decade so that you find high quality restaurants with tasty food all over the city. Compared to other European capitals you pay much less for a dining out.

Hungary has always been a major wine country; one of our most famous wine region is the Tokaj, but also well known the Balaton region, Villány, Eger and Szekszárd.

Coffee Houses and restaurants:

The coffee house culture came to Hungary during the Hungarian-Austrian time and still continues. Cafés like Café New York, Café Central or Café Gerbeaud are definitely worth a visit. Over the last couple of years many bars have popped up out of the ground in some backyards of old houses. These bars use unused houses as a location which gives an amazing flair to the bars.

Shopping:

Budapest has excellent shopping whatever your taste. From antiques to crystals, jewelers and the latest fashion to local food and drink specialties - you can find it all either in the elegant boutiques of the city center or in one of the many large American style shopping malls.

Accommodation:

From luxurius five star hotels to cheap hostels Budapest offers a large palette of accommodation services. BHMS can suggest you a number of quality and affordable accommodation partners, with whom our clients had pleasent experiences. Read this article for more about accommodation in Budapest.

Budapest weather in general:

Budapest’s climate is continental, although recently it has had Mediterranean properties as well. Daily differences in temperature are small, warm days are followed by warm nights and visa versa.

SPRING (March-April-May):

Budapest is the most beautiful at the end of April, beginning of May – this time of the year it resembles a huge garden full of flowers. Lowest-highest temperature: 5-18 Celsius, windy weather, Sunshine: in March typically sunny-cloudy weather, sunshine is not strong yet, it gets stronger and stronger in April-May.

SUMMER (June-July-August):

Lowest-highest temperature: 15-35 Celsius, windy during storms, Sunshine: strong and sustained, Fall: not much rain, concentrated in forms of powerful thunderstorms. First warmer days arrive with June, along with the first heavier storms hitting the capital. In July and August, hot days and cozy, warm nights come after each other, interrupted by one or two colder days.

AUTUMN (September-October-November):

There are many nice sunny days in September, but as the trees begin to lose their leaves, the days get colder. Lowest-highest temperature: 4-20 Celsius, windy weather at the end of the season, Sunshine: medium, getting weaker, Fall: scattered showers, more rain in late October – early November.

WINTER (December-January-February):

Winter weather is often changing, it is a bit unpredictable. Generally it is cold; the temperature scarcely rises above zero. Usually lots of snow in January-February. The city is filled with roast chestnut and mulled wine vendors. Lowest-highest temperature: -15-5 C, scarcely windy, Sunshine: lots, but the air stays cold, lots of rain in early December, later snow.

What is a Dental Implant Surgery?

Dental implant surgery is an ideal solution for people who have one or more missing tooth. Dental implants replace both the tooth and the root. The final crowns on an implant will be versatile, strong and natural-looking.

Dental implants are metal posts that are surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath your gums. Once it is placed, they allow your dentist to mount replacement teeth onto them. Because implants are built into your jawbone, they provide stable support for artificial teeth.

Dental implants are made of various biomaterials. Most commonly titanium is used which is a surgical metal because it is the most compatible with human biology.

Many people who have lost teeth in their upper jaw — particularly the back teeth, or molars — do not have enough bone for implants to be placed. Because of the anatomy of the skull, there is more bone at the back of the upper jaw than at the lower jaw. A sinus lift, or it is also called a sinus augmentation, is a surgery that adds bone to your upper jaw in the area of your molars and premolars to make it taller. The bone is added between your jaw and the maxillary sinuses. These are on either side of your nose. To make room for the bone grafting material, the sinus membrane has to be moved upward. That is why it is called sinus lift procedure. The bone used in a sinus lift may come from your own body or from a cadaver. But synthetic materials, which can stimulate bone formation, also are sometimes used.

If your own bone will be used in the sinus lift, it will be taken from other areas of your mouth. In a typical situation, a patient has lost a single tooth and wants to have it replaced with a crown supported by a dental implant. However, the tooth has been missing for several years and there is not enough bone to support the implant. In this case, bone taken from the patient’s chin can be used to “rebuild” the lost bone so that it can support an implant. This bone replacement procedure would be done at the dentital surgery.

Why to choose Implant Surgery?

People can lose their teeth for a wide variety of reasons, including infection, gum disease, accident or injury. When natural teeth are removed, many problems occur. The remaining teeth can shift, rotate and can become crooked and improper bite will develop. It makes very difficult to chew food properly. Gaps between teeth may cause embarrassment, problems with speech, and lack of self-esteem.

The result of the implant surgery is better health (creates a comfortable bite, reduces chances of gum disease) and enhanced aesthetics.

Advantage of the Implant Surgery:

no adjacent teeth need to be prepared or ground down to hold your new replacement
tooth/teeth in place

implants hold the permanenet crowns stable

offer the same force of biting

can last a lifetime

How long can a Dental Implant last?

Implants generally last 10-20 years, depending on the location of the implant and patient compliance with oral hygiene and dental check ups’ however, with excellent oral hygiene, they can last a lifetime.

A dental implant surgery can be a costly procedure. The basic treatment costs £ 495 - £ 785. However, it is worth considering such a treatment due to its long lasting result.

Dental Implants – Implant Surgery Abroad

People’s oral hygiene isn’t as effective as it should be nowadays. There are more harmful componenets in foods than there used to be and we have forgotten how to clean our teeth properly. This is one of the reasons why we have more and more problems with our teeth. Loosing a tooth can be a shock to anyone, but it doesn’t has to be any more.

Dental Implants can solve this problem. Many patients who have chosen dental implants describe a quality of life that is much more comfortable and secure than the lifestyle sustained by those with bridges or removable dentures. Dental implants combine the best of modern science and technology.

A successful implant requires that all parties involved, the patient, the oral surgeon who surgically places the implant and the cosmetic dentist who makes the crown for the implant follow a careful plan of treatment.

Implant dentistry is a developing field of the dental industry. You have the opportunity to choose the dental clinic where you have the implant surgery done. In the UK there may be a long waiting time and treatment is expensive. By contrast, in Hungary you can start the treatment one week after the consultation or in some cases, immediately after so you can cut your expenses.

At British Hungarian Medical Service you will meet English speaking dentists and staff. We work with top quality implants and crown materials.

We have representatives in the UK who have live in England so there won’t be any communication problems. They can provide you with contacts of past clients who have been our patients should you require a reference.

Before the treatment you will receive all the necessary information you need in written form as well as orally. A treatment plan contains the prices so there won’t be any hidden costs.

Altogether it is worth considering having your dental implant surgery with BHMS!!

Root canal is the natural cavity within the center of the tooth. The pulp or pulp chamber is the soft area within the root canal. The tooth’s nerve lies in the middle of the root canal.

What is a Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is a frequently performed dental procedure to treat a tooth with infected or dead pulp tissue or when the tooth is badly decayed. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and the infected pulp tissues are removed then the inside of the tooth which is called pulp chamber is cleaned and shaped and then fially sealed with filling.

How to recognise a Root Canal problem:

A diseased tooth’s pulp may cause inflammation or infected.
Some indications that a tooth may need a root canal treatment are:

Sensitivity to heat

Sensitivity to cold that lasts longer than a couple of seconds

Significant pain when biting or chewing

Loosening of the tooth

Swelling of the gum near the affected tooth

Facial swelling

A discolored tooth, with or without pain

A broken tooth

Sometimes, tooth pulp can become damaged or infected without presenting any symptoms. To determine whether your tooth needs root canal treatment or not the dentist checks it by placing hot or cold substances against the tooth and feel surrounding tissues and gently tap on the tooth. An x-ray is taken during a dental check-up may also establish the problem.

What can damage the dental pulp?

Dental decay that is untreated or deep-seated

Decay underneath a deep filling

Habitual tooth grinding

Advanced gum disease

An injury that creates an abscess in the bone

An untreated cavity is a common cause of pulp infection. The decay erodes the enamel and dentin of the tooth until it opens into the root canal system. It allows bacteria to infect the pulp. Infections inside the teeth do not respond to antibiotic treatment very well. The inflammation caused by the infection restricts the tooth’s blood supply, so antibiotics in the bloodstream can hardly reach the infection. The reduced blood supply also limits the pulp’s ability to heal itself.

Why choose Root Canal Treatment?

The root canal treatment is the last possible option to save your own teeth. Keeping your natural teeth also helps you to avoid more expensive and comprehensive treatments, such as implants or crowns. It is always better to keep your natural teeth if at all possible.
If you have an infection of the pulp, you may not feel any pain at first. But if it left untreated, the infection will cause pain and swelling. In some cases, an abscess will form. Eventually, the tooth may need to be extracted. If a tooth is missing, the teeth next to it can drift out of line and can become overstressed. If an infected or traumatic tooth that needs root canal treatment is ignored, not only can you lose the tooth, but also the infection can spread to other parts of your body.

Expectation after Root Canal Treatment

For the first few days after the completed Root Canal Rreatment, the tooth may feel sensitive due to natural tissue inflammation. Especially if there was pain or infection before the procedure. This sensitivity or discomfort usually can be controlled with painkillers. Most patients can return to their normal activities the next day. Until your root canal procedure is completely finished you should minimize chewing on the tooth under repair. This step will help avoid recontamination of the interior of the tooth and also may prevent a fragile tooth from breaking before the tooth can be fully restored. As far as oral health care is concerned, brush and floss as you regularly would and see your dentist at normally scheduled intervals.

How Successful Are Root Canals?

Root canal treatment is highly successful. The procedure has more than a 96% success rate. Most root canal treated teeth will last as long as you own permanent teeth. Also, because the final step of the root canal procedure is application of a restoration such as a crown or a filling, it will not be obvious that a root canal was performed. Although the pulp is removed your tooth remains alive, nourished by surrounding tissues.

All the teeth can have Root Canal Filling. The cost of this treatment depends on which tooth needs root canal treatment. Costs start from £100. It is worth having this treatment because this is the last chance to save the tooth.
