Periodontal Treatment

What is Periodontal diesase?

Periodontal disease, otherwise know as gum disease, is something that should be dealt with promptly because if left untreated, it can result in the loss of teeth and in some more severe cases, all teeth can be lost.

What effect will gum disease have?

The bacteria that we all have in our mouths, if ignored, can cause a build-up of plaque and tartar and subsequently, gum disease can result. Pockets develop and as they deepen, this allows more bacteria to attack the bone and gums. As the bone level decreases, the gum line follows the bone also decreasing and eventually there will not be enough bone around the root to hold the tooth in place and the tooth falls out. As more teeth fall out, the remaining teeth become overloaded and more problems develop.

Other causes of gum disease can be due to smoking.

How can it be treated?

Bleeding and swollen gums due to gingivitis can often easily be treated by regular hygiene treatment and general improvement in oral hygiene. We offer treatment as necessary from a simple regular scale and polish, curettage (deep cleaning) to educating and recommending a maintenance programme once the gum disease has been controlled.
